Gengy's Mongolian BBQ

Posted by Boysmum2 over at Life Today

When my boys went to stay with Grandma, they had the pleasure of eating out here, Gengy's Mongolian BBQ.

Now I have never had the pleasure and was a little unsure of how the whole process worked.
So last weekend I decided we needed to venture forth and conquer.
I invited Grandma to join us, for moral support etc.

I will never know what I was afraid of?
If you have never been to Gengy's then now is the time to go.
Unlike other buffet restaurants where you pay to eat as much as you like of the prepared food on offer here at Gengy's you pay to eat as much of the food that you choose that is then cooked how you like it, when you want it. Ok they only serve stirfry, but when it is cooked to your own liking with you own personal ingredients in it, stir fry sounds great.

You get to choose all sorts of raw meat, chicken, beef, lamb or pork even seafood (marinated available if you want too) you add to this any or all of the vegetables available, add a little oil, any sauce flavouring you desire and simply hand it to the chef who then, right in front of you, cooks your stirfry to your liking, simple.
The food was fresh and inviting, there was only a small amount out at a time so it was constantly being changed with fresh stuff. The areas were clean and tidy and this can be difficult to do when you have everyone helping themselves all the time.
Half the fun was standing watching them cook your food. The boys were enthrailed with the flames flying up in the area when the chef made the oil light up and the smell was definitely mouth watering.

My 2 loved this idea and I am amazed at the stuff they agreed to eat, vegetables were being added that I was surprised they wanted and further more actually ate when cooked!
Because you get to choose your own ingredients then there is no wastage because everyone gets dinner how they want it.
Which makes for a pleasant meal because you then don't have to spend the whole meal listening to people saying "I don't like this!" or "I didn't want this tonight!" or "Did we have to have chicken tonight?"

Price wise, they were reasonable as well.
Adults $28.95 and children $3 + $1 per year of age (ie: 6 yrs = $9)
They had quite a few specials available as well.
Students with ID $22.95
Early Bird Special $24.95 (adult) - this is where you can eat between 5-7pm on Friday or Saturday evening but you must be out by 7.15pm.
We however, were not aware of this but we booked a table for 6pm, had dinner and were out by 7.15 anyway, so time wise we know that it was not a rush to eat in an allocated time frame and considering the queues for the food at 7pm I am gald we did eat earlier otherwise the boys would have been complaining about it taking so long, although the queues moved reasonably fast.

There are restaurants available in Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton and Rotorua.

For a peace free meal where everyone eats what they want, cooked how they like it, I couldn't ask for anything better.
We will definitely be going back there.

The Parenting Place

By Simone at Greatfun4kids

I love the Parenting Place.

Great coffee. Delicious food. Super cheap prices (cheaper than McCafe).
So reasonable in fact that almost every time I go there I have to double check the order....

~ Did you get the kids hot chocolate? The giant gluten free choc chip cookie? The walnut caramel slice? {drool} Oh what about trim chai latte? You got all of it? Oh wow. $11.00 for all that??? Fab.

There are toys for the kids to play with and stacks of space to spread out and run around.
Even a giant touch screen they can do "painting" or play games on.
The walls are covered with words reflecting the values of the place.

Then there's this beautiful rocking horse...

...handcrafted by legendary parenting guru and founder of Parents Inc himself, Ian Grant. Can you believe it? Amazing. He's a grandad you know.

And I got shake hands with Ian!
He was right there at the cafe eating lunch with someone ;last week when I was in there.
I waited til he was finished and then i bowled on up to him and shook his hand.
Thank you for everything you guys do, I said.
And I told him, oh I am writing for the magazine... did you read my stories?
And that he said, yes Mary and I loved them. Thank you so much for contributing.
*grin*

And then he talked to me about... his grandchildren.
It's easy to see they are never far from his heart.
The Parenting Place is run by people who love kids. And families.

The Parenting Place is more than just a cafe. They have family coaches. And parenting workshops on every parenting topic you can imagine. With legends like Diane Levy taking them.
In the resource centre are all kinds of books and parenting staples like the My Story boxes. The Red Plate. And a wall of "Hot Tips" leaflets...

Sibling Rivalry. Holding a Family Meeting. Ways to Teach Your Children Values.

Those are just the ones I grabbed and stashed in my handbag.

They also have a cool website with webinars, tips and online resources.
So even if you live outside of Auckland you can still visit the Parenting Place online here. You'll just have to make your own coffee.

The Cafe {and resource centre}is located at 300 Great South Rd, Greenlane.

Meet you there for coffee sometime?

Nature at its best in the Marlborough Sounds

by Sarah of Catching the Magic

The dolphins leaped out of the swell around our boat, turning on their sides to examine us. Their white under-bellies were clear to see as they rolled in the water to get a good look at us. These bottle-nosed dolphins were just as curious about us as we were with them. The energy on-board was buzzing. There was a connection between human and dolphin that only the heavens could describe.

Bottle nosed dolphins in Marlborough Sounds

Our guides on the Dolphin Watch Ecotour were equally excited. Their genuine passion and love of nature shone through in their commentary, as Australasian Gannets circled the skies above.

Australasian Gannet

Pulling in at one of the many, beautiful bays of the Marlborough Sounds we saw New Zealand fur seals majestically preening themselves on rocky outcrops. We stood at the bow of our tour boat, capturing the beauty of nature with our camera lenses, our eyes and our minds.

We were on our way to Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary, as part of a half-day tour.

Half day eco-tour in Marlborough Sounds

The children sat with excitement on the boat, feeling at ease with their other travelling companions and happy that there were a few children of similar age. Sophie made friends with a boy her age, whilst Alice nuzzled in for a kiss with the boy's younger brother - who was equally taken with Alice! Life-jackets were optional, but gleefully received by the children (especially as they had whistles attached - thankfully not too ear-piercing!).

When we reached the island, cleared of all introduced predators and a haven for native bird species, there were two options; a guided walk to the viewpoint at the top, or a leisurely rest by 'the watering hole' to watch native birds drink and bathe.

Top left; Bellbird/Korimako. Top right; NZ Robin. Bottom left; NZ Parakeet/Kakariki. Bottom right; Fantail/Piwakawaka.

Dan took Charlotte and Sophie for the hike (I'd experienced it with a friend in 2009 and opted out this time round; since I had sleeping Alice weighing down my arms). I sat with Chinese Grandma and Granddad by the watering hole, where we were treated to the sight of all the birds above, as well as beautiful Kereru (NZ native wood pigeon).

We took a little stroll up to one of the little blue penguin nesting boxes and peeked in to see one. A very friendly robin led the way, popping back and forth to keep an eye on our progress.

By the time we returned to the water-hole, Charlotte & Sophie had already made the descent down from the peak and were waiting for us! They'd had a great time. Charlotte had even been given a natural baptism - when a bird 'pooped' on her head. She is still asking what species of bird does red 'poops'!

Motuara Island, Marlborough Sounds

We all made our way back to our boat for the return cruise through the Sounds, with the girls marvelling at the crystal clear waters, jelly fish, kina and mussels.

Return boat trip

And we were all grateful for the tea, coffee, hot-chocolate and biscuits (except the ginger biscuits were a little tough going on Grandma's false teeth!). Alice drifted off for a nap, with the hum of the engine, whilst I sat out on deck admiring the native bush and nesting shags.

NZ shag species roosting

We made a quick stop at the Bay of Many Coves Resort (which Dan and I knew from our pre-children days as 'Punga Cove'). We looked on whistfully as a couple disembarked to enjoy an evening of decadent accommodation, fine Marlborough wines and dining.

Dan and I had stopped there, when it was 'Punga Cove', way back in 1997. We had walked the 'Queen Charlotte Track' and treated ourselves to one night of luxury accommodation. Dan told me later that he was planning to propose to me whilst we dined at the restaurant there - but just as he was plucking up the courage to get down on one knee a bunch of rowdy trampers walked in and he lost his nerve! It ended up taking him six months from asking my Dad for my hand in marriage to actually finding the opportune moment to propose (and it ended up being in the vineyards of Marlborough on Valentines Day).

Bay of Many Coves

There was little time for romance on this trip, but the memories keep us strong and our time will come again (even though we'll probably be silver-haired by that time!).

We returned to Picton in time to enjoy the Maritime Festival and fireworks. A perfect ending to an incredible day where nature really did put on the most wonderful show. The weather wasn't its best (note the warmer weather gear!), but at least the rain held off and the wildlife was certainly happy with the conditions :)

A big thumbs up for Dolphin Watch Ecotours from all of us!

(Please note this is not a sponsored post, we simply had a genuinely wonderful experience and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting the Marlborough Sounds).

The Best of the Best - Waiheke Wineries

Story by Miss Bonnie
The "inside vines" with paper bags protecting little gems
of deliciousness from the birds.... all the more for me!

Post New Years Nick, Little Red and I had the blissful opportunity of staying on Waiheke for a week with the in-laws. It was utterly superb. The weather was balmy, the ocean was inviting and the food (and wine!) was to die for. We schmoozed along to two vineyards while on the island and they were both absolutely fantastic, so much so that as soon as I set foot on Waiheke again I'll be up there lounging in the sun before you can say "Vino, please!"
The view from our table (pictures don't do it justice)

So the first on the list was Stonyridge Winery which was just down the road from our bach. The cafe is huge with comfortable and spacious seating and a beautiful decked area off to the side. Our table was right on the cusp of cafe and vineyard and had gorgeous views down to their lawn (perfect for the kiddies!) which is populated with olive trees and sunflowers and the sprawling vines beyond.

We started with a Fallen Angel Chardonnay from which the grapes are grown elsewhere but the wine is produced at the vineyard. The Chardonnay (and the Sauvignon Blanc which we followed on with) were both stunning and, oh heck, don't even get me started on the food!

Gorgeous sunflowers

Nick had a steak which he has since dubbed "the best steak he's ever eaten" (this coming from a man who loves his steak), the others shared tapas plates which were brimming with delicious olives, salmon, oysters, cured meats, and fresh, melt-in-your mouth bread (just to name a few things) and I had a chicken dish which was, to quote Nick, the best chicken I've ever eaten. Baked and served on bok choy with cashews, baby onions and a tomato and coriander salsa. AMAZING. 'Nuff said.

Grapes picked straight from the vine - bliss!

On top of all this, the staff were fantastic - courteous, friendly, prompt and well educated on the wines, food and history of the vineyard. Upon asking our waitress what the paper bags were for that hung from the vines within the restaurant we were told they were to stop birds from flying in and she reached up and pulled four bunches down for us to snack on. Apologies if I'm starting to sound like a broken record but they were the most delicious grapes I've ever eaten - they were like passionfruit, feijoa and gooseberries all mixed into one sweet little bit of mush. Delish!

The next vineyard on our must visit list was Passage Rock after we'd been told that a writer for the New York Times had declared their pizzas "the best in the world". Even the winery themselves boast their 12 inches of scrumptiousness as "world famous on Waiheke". And I'm not one to turn down a good pizza so off we went.

Well, what else can I say other than that the place is like heaven on earth? It was a super hot day so we were grateful to be seated at an outside table under the shade of a giant umbrella. But for those seeking the comfort of the indoors the restaurant itself is large, spacious and cool and opens out onto a patio and a lawn which has more seating and a swing ball set for the kids right next to rows and rows of vibrant vines. The outskirts of the eatery are adorned in beautiful wildflowers and there's even a pond and a wee footbridge.

The most delish pizza in the world!

The service, as at Stonyridge, was impeccable as was the wine (I had a Rose and Nick a Riesling). But! Let's get to the important part - the world famous pizzas! Well, the New York Times was right on the money, my pizza was by far the best I had ever tasted. I had the vegetarian pizza (sounds boring, right? But no!) which, on top of a perfectly crispy base, was stacked with aubergine, olives, roast capsicum and pumpkin, artichoke, courgette, feta and mozzarella with a garnish of rocket and basil. Nick had the chicken pizza which I didn't try but given the speed with which he wolfed it down, I reckon it was pretty darn good.

Our vinos. Red was on the waters (sober driver and all that)

Beautiful wildflowers

So there you have it, two fab vineyards on the beautiful island of Waiheke. I highly recommend both - everything was superb and best of all they're both kid friendly, yippee!

Wellington Summer Festival

Are you lot all aware of the Summer Festival going on here in Wellington?

Every year my family attends at least 2 of these fantastic free events.

On Saturday (just been) we headed to the sound shell at the botanic gardens complete with picnic baskets, warm jackets and home made hand cranked ice cream (to be served in waffle cones - mmm).

It was a total blast. There were heaps of families with their wee babes dancing on the grass. Totally worth attending if you are in the area.

Carlucci Land: More than Mini-Golf

STORY BY SARAH OF CATCHING THE MAGIC (CHEZ LEE)

Carlucci Land, in Happy Valley, Wellington is so much more than mini-golf. Created with love, passion and vision this mini-golf is a work of art. Artist, Carl Gifford, is the man behind the magic. Scrap and rocks have been transformed into sculptures. Kiwis, spiders and dragonflies hide around each corner. River stones tower up and boulders entice children to climb on them.

We stopped in for an impromptu visit and I wish I’d taken the decent camera with me. It is a photographers dream with so many captivating scenes, sculptures and angles. I made do with my phone camera and tried to capture a little of the magic. It is a fantasy world for children and we were greeted with such a friendly welcome.

Carlucci Land mini-golf

Every time we visit there’s a new sculpture or some development to further add to the appeal.

Carlucci Land sculptures

There are plans for a coffee machine to be installed and once that’s in place, Carlucci Land will be bustling with visitors who will want to linger for much more than the mini-golf. The water fall flowing down to the outdoor seating area makes for a very scenic and atmospheric spot for a cuppa.

Water fall at Carlucci Land and outdoor seating area

We had a fun game (well Alice and I watched – with Alice tasting random stones, trying to eat the golf ball and climbing on the sculptures). It’s great to go to a mini-golf place not JUST for the golf. The sculptures are what make it for me. It’s wonderful to see so much ‘junk’ turned into art – very, very inspiring.

Free "Fluffies" at Esquires cafe in Tauranga

STORY BY NIKKI-NOO IN TAURANGA

So this will be a quick review for my first post, but yesterday Hubby and I took our 1 year old son to Esquires Cafe, in the Goddards Arcade in Tauranga, so that he could try his first ever "fluffy"

When we got there, we received EXCELLENT service, and were told that we could have a free fluffy for our son when adults are purchasing something. This in itself was great news, although we expected a cup with just some fluff and nothing else.

We received our drinks and food, and out came the fluffy. Needless to say our son was estatic to have his own drink all to himself, and the girl that bought it out explained it was very weak hot chocolate underneath a whole lot of fluff, with chocolate powder sprinkled on top and a couple of marshmellows, all in a cute little cup.

Well, there is a couple of photos below. It was a messy experience, but he had a great time and the fact that the food and drinks there are a little on the expensive side was more than made up for by the excellent free fluffy!

Excuse our son looking a little tired, he was way overdue for a sleep by then!

Ocean Spa - Napier

story by Jen from Snapshots 2010

Yesterday we enjoyed an afternoon at Ocean Spa. I don't like swimming in the sea but I LOVE swimming here and yes I did swim (Sorry no photos of me!) Guess my boys were too busy enjoying themselves.

As well as all the warmly heated pools this place also has a cafe, although we brought a picnic :)
A view out over the sea so beautiful and a gym equipped with sauna and steam room - pool side.

May And Peter Harris Playground

story written by Jen from Snapshots 2010

In my opinion the best play ground in Napier is the May And Peter Harris Playground. Its big, well shaded and best of all fully fenced. This ensures safety for little ones and although its on a major road it remains safe. It has many different pieces of equipment for young explorers to play, exercise and gain confidence on.

Even my older children have been known to enjoy it :)

It is popular and with park tables and seats is a nice place for lunch. Some families use the grass areas to have picnics on too :)

I would recommend children were dressed in play clothes and maybe have a change of clothes with them as it features a sand pit, water play area.

The Library Cafe: Everything Friendly

STORY BY SIMONE FROM GREATFUN4KIDS

My sister called last night and said, "Hey lets meet for lunch seeing as it's school holidays..."
I knew just where to take her...

The Library Cafe in Onehunga is not far from her work, and is ultra kid-friendly as well as having a great gluten-free selection.

My sis is gluten intolerant and I am recently gluten-free, so a cafe with GF options is high on our list.
How can I not rave about this gem of a cafe?
Firstly the architecture. An old library, turned into a stunning cafe in two parts.

There's the kid-free Reading Room, lined with books for a peaceful escape... (one day I will make it in there I swear)

And the Other Bit. The bit for those of us with noisy kids in tow. Which is equally gorgeous but equipped with an indoor play corner full of great toys...

...and opening onto a terrace complete with kiddy playstuff and a big slide. Bliss in summer, when they even have a bouncy castle. It's all fenced, lots of room to run. Brilliant.

We front up to the counter and peer into the cabinet in search of the famed gluten-free offerings.
Oh dear. Did I speak too soon? I can't see anything that is obviously gluten free!

I ask the girl behind the counter, where is the GF stuff??

She indicates the whole top shelf. And the second shelf. All labelled with different symbols. Dairy free. Wheat free. Gluten free. Diabetic friendly. Peanut free. I am in cafe heaven as I realise that the luscious looking caramel slice is within my dietary reach!!! Oh joy.

My sis orders drinks and the slice for us, I order chicken salads for us both and a couple of kids packs for my boys. They come with drink, snacks, fruit and a toasted sandwich. They even have a special delicious gluten free version (but my GF daughter is away today so standard ham and cheese toastie will do).

At first it's impossible to enjoy my surroundings, as my little guy is in one of those moods. It starts with him stealing my caramel slice (well, it is delicious, I really can't blame him) and ends with my attempting to wipe his snotty nose and him melting down in a puddle of screams. not like him at all. Boo!

A lovely motherly staff member comes up and asks if he's OK, suggests kindly that I take him outside to calm him down while she gets our table all sorted.

Eventually the screams turn to giggles and he runs off to chase his brother and play on the slide.

Back to the caramel slice. Mmmmmm, divine. Real chocolate on top. I would never have known it was GF.

Coffee = good. Salad = average. Overpriced and a bit overly-leafy. But still.

The joy of coming to a great kid friendly place where the kids can run around and you can choose allergy-friendly food?? Fabulous.

Next time I'll avoid the salad and stick to the caramel slice. Heaven in a Slice. Yay for the Library Cafe.
